Click Open, followed by entering your Administrator password to start the install process. Video tutorial: How to install Windows 10 on a Mac external drive
This is a much-requested follow up to our original Windows 10/external drive tutorial posted back in 2017. Be sure to subscribe to 9to5Mac on YouTube for more handy tutorials like this. In this video walkthrough, I show you step-by-step how to deploy a Windows installation using Boot Camp drivers on an external drive connected to your Mac. With this in mind, setting up an external Windows drive on your Mac might prove to be handy. Considering that many Macs out there have relatively minuscule amounts of onboard storage, installing Boot Camp to run Windows isn’t always a feasible option. I could’ve taken a photo of my own Mighty Mouse, but it’s filthy.Traditional Boot Camp installations can take up a lot of storage space on your Mac. But I believe it should work with any Apple wireless mouse. I’ve only tried this on my Apple Mighty Mouse. Once you’re connected, Windows 10 will finish setting it up. If prompted for a passcode, try 0000 or 1111. Your Apple mouse should show up in the list of devices. Keep holding the left-click button till the green light on the bottom starts flashing. When Windows starts looking for the device, switch on your mouse while holding the left-click button. Turn off your mouse and click Add Bluetooth or other device and choose Bluetooth. To get it to pair, go into your Bluetooth settings in Windows 10. There isn’t a pairing button, just an on/off switch on the bottom that slides over the optical sensor on the bottom. It had been so long since I used my Mighty Mouse that I had forgotten how to pair it. Now that you have the drivers, the next step is to pair the mouse. Proceed through the Device Driver Installation Wizard. (Note: If you are using an Apple Magic Trackpad, try out the AppleWirelessTrackpad64.exe drivers.) Run it to install your Magic Mouse drivers or Mighty Mouse drivers. In there, you’ll find a file called applewirelessmouse64.exe. Inside, to navigate the BootCamp > Drivers > Apple folder. Go ahead and download this file and unzip it.
I found the driver in the Boot Camp Support Software (August 2015) zip file. But if you are no longer a Mac user, you can snag them from Apple’s support pages. Normally, you get these drivers as part of the Boot Camp Assistant setup process. They are bundled up with Boot Camp, which lets you boot Windows on your Mac. I am using the discontinued Apple Mighty Mouse, model A1197.Īpple makes official Windows drivers for their peripherals, including the Mighty Mouse and Magic Mouse.
